My name is Timothy L. Smith, I started my
career as a Brakeman for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company
in Roseville, California May 3, 1972. We had the 16 hour law back
then, but it was being phased out to 14 and then it changed again to
the current 12 hour law. I transferred to the Enginemen's side to
become a Fireman/Hostler on August 17, 1973. I worked as a
Fireman/hostler until my promotion to Locomotive Engineer November
5, 1976. With little seniority due to the hiring trends, I worked
the Extra Board most of my carreer until being honored with becoming
the State Chairman of California in April of 1998. I was qualified
to run trains from Oakland, CA to Elko, NV and from Mt. Shasta, CA
to Bakersfield, CA. I had the pleasure of working with some
wonderful people over the years and appreciate the foundation they
provided me in my carreer. I have lived in a little town that goes
by the name of Cool for the last twenty one years. I have taken
alot of ribbing about the name of the town, but always enjoyed the
humor.
My BLE(T) union involvement started in 1991 when
I was appointed to be the Legislative Representative of Division 415
Roseville. In 1994, upon attending my first State Board's
convention in Sacramento, I was elected to be the 2nd Vice
Chairman. Two years later, I moved up to the position of 1st Vice
Chairman due to a resignation of the predecessor. Then, as I stated
earlier, in April of 1998 I was elected to the position of State
Chairman of our CSLB.
This last May, I
was elected to be the National Association of State Legislative
Board Chairmen's (NASLBC) Chairman. I plan to bring the same
successes to the National scene as we have enjoyed during my tenure
in California. These jobs run concurrent with each other. Needless
to say, I am very busy, but love the idea of making a difference to
those I so proudly represent not only in the great state of
California, but nationally.
